Privacy policy

Nipagesh is a dating site and app for Jewish people, straight, bi, gay and lesbian: this website, nipagesh.uk, and the Nipagesh iPhone app. This policy says what we hold about you, why, who else sees it, and how to have it deleted.
What we hold
- Your account: your email address, the username you choose, your date of birth and your password, which is stored only as a one-way hash and can't be read back.
- Your profile: your photos, whether you're a man or a woman, your sexual orientation (straight, bi, gay or lesbian), what you're looking for (age range, distance, and for gay, lesbian and bi members, types such as Bear or Butch, and for gay and bi men a role), and anything else you choose to fill in.
- Height and build, if you add them: what you choose to say. They're never read from your photos.
- Faith and background, if you add them: how you're Jewish, whether you keep Shabbat or kosher or drink, your heritage and languages, whether you're a convert, whether you're out to your family, and what you're here for.
- Sexual orientation, religion and ethnic origin: your profile says your sexual orientation, using Nipagesh says something about your religion, and your profile may say more, including your heritage. UK law treats all of these as special category data. We hold them only because you choose to put them on your profile, and only to run the site.
- Sexual health, if you add it (gay and bi men): when you last tested and whether you're on PrEP, and whether you want reminders. This is health data. It's optional, shown to others only if you choose to show it, and you can remove it at any time.
- Your location: a postcode, zip code or town in the UK, the USA or Israel that you type, or, if you allow it, your phone's location, which the app updates while you're using it (never in the background). We round your phone's position to about a quarter of a mile, then keep the coordinates to work out distances and an area name such as "Westminster (SW1A)" or "Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel". Other members never see the coordinates.
- Looks read from your photos: your photos may be read automatically to note things like hair colour and length, tattoos or glasses (and, for men, facial and body hair), and whether your face is clear, so that members can filter by them. We never record ethnicity, skin colour, weight, age or attractiveness.
- Messages: the messages and photos you send and receive, and when they were read.
- Activity: when you were last online, whose profiles you look at, and alerts you set for when someone comes online.
- Check-ins: if you set up a check-in before meeting someone, who you're meeting, the area and the time you expect to be back.
- Reports and blocks: reports you make, with your reason, and the people you block.
- People you know, if you add them: the email addresses you add so that you and they never see each other here. They're used for nothing else, never shown to anyone, and deleted when you remove them or delete your account.
- Subscription: you pay Apple in the iPhone app. We never see your card or Apple account details. We keep Apple's transaction number for your subscription and the date it's paid up to.
- Notifications: if you allow them, a token that lets Apple or Google deliver notifications to your phone.
- Signing in: a session token in the app, and a cookie on this website, so you stay signed in. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.
What other members can see
- Only members you're both interested in: men or women, by each other's orientation. A straight woman is shown to straight and bi men, a lesbian to lesbian and bi women, and so on.
- Your username, age, whether you're a man or a woman and your orientation, photos, type (gay, lesbian and bi members) and role (gay and bi men), what you're looking for, the looks noted from your photos, your area name and how far away you are, whether you're online, roughly how quickly you reply, the faith and background details you filled in (including whether you're out to your family), and your sexual health only if you chose to show it.
- Members whose profiles you look at can see that you did, and when, on their Views page, unless you're in discreet mode. Members you set an online alert for are never told.
- If you take a screenshot of someone's profile or your chat with them in the app, they're told (by name, unless they couldn't otherwise find you). You can block screenshots of Nipagesh on your phone.
- If we remove a member for breaking our rules, everyone who chatted with them in the 30 days before is sent a safety notice naming them, by notification and email.
- In discreet mode you're hidden from the grid and only members you've been in touch with can see you, with your photos blurred until you choose to show them.
- Your email address is never shown to other members.
- The site administrator can see what's needed to deal with reports and help with accounts.
Why we hold it
To run Nipagesh: to show your profile, find people near you, carry messages, send the emails and notifications that go with them, keep members safe, handle your subscription and reset a forgotten password. You agree, when you join (or the first time you open Nipagesh after we added it), to your photos, messages and profile details going to Anthropic for the jobs listed below. Nipagesh can't work without it, so if you'd rather not, you can delete your account instead. We rely on your consent for the special category and health data you choose to add, and on running the service you signed up for for the rest. We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising or share it with advertisers.
Companies that process data for us
- Anthropic: checks chat messages for scams, requests for money and threats, so the person they were sent to can be warned; translates a message when you tap Translate; suggests first messages from what two members' profiles show; and picks "You might also like" profiles from what members' profiles show; and answers you in the Nipagesh Guide, an AI helper in Messages, using what you write to it and your profile. Your chat with the Guide is kept until you press Start again or delete your account. Anthropic doesn't use this to train its models.
- Anthropic: reads your photos to note the looks described above and whether they show a face.
- Brevo: sends our emails (confirming your email address, password resets), so it handles your email address and those emails.
- Apple and Google: deliver notifications to your phone. Apple also takes payment for the subscription.
- postcodes.io: turns a UK postcode or location into an area name.
- OpenStreetMap (Nominatim): turns a town, a US zip code or a location in the USA or Israel into an area name. It receives the place you typed or your position, never your name or account.
- Amazon Web Services: hosts the server and database, in the United Kingdom.
How long we keep it
Until you delete your account. Records of payments may be kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from your profile, in the app or on this website (Delete my account), or email us and we'll do it. Deleting is immediate and can't be undone: it removes your profile, photos, messages and everything else above. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription, which Apple bills: cancel it on your iPhone in Settings > your name > Subscriptions.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, withdraw your consent, and object to how we use it. Email us at the address below. If you're unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Over 18s only
Nipagesh is only for adults. Nobody under 18 may use it, and we don't knowingly hold data about anyone under 18.
